WITHDRAWN
Alexander Harper
My name is Alexander Harper, I'm a 3rd year law student at QUT.
Of course there is large voter fraud happening on and before the AGM & Election day. Why do QUTLS leaders deny what is happening? So naive! I think I will win BIGLY, but they are trying to STEAL this Election. We will never let them do it. Preferences cannot be SWAPPED after the nominations are closed! I hope the Returning Officers have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Society and our Constitution, giving each Portfolio a change to certify a corrected set of facts, NOT the fraudulent or inaccurate ones which they were asked to previously certify. QUTLS demands the truth!
[This claim about election fraud is disputed, probably]
President ①
Bella Busby
Hello! My name’s Bella and I would love to be elected as the President, or Vice-President for the QUTLS in 2022. I am currently the Director of Education, which has set me in very good stead to take on a Management Committee role. This year I have worked closely with the sponsorship team, with our sponsors and with members of the faculty. I feel very confident in my ability to continue reaching out to important stakeholders to set up sponsorship arrangements, promote new initiatives and seek feedback about our events. I am also well-aware of the significant time commitment required to be part of the T4. Though I’m going into my sixth and final year of study, I have reduced my study load and extra-curricular commitments, so I can make the QUTLS a priority.
I believe I can make a valuable contribution to the management of the QUTLS in 2022 because I understand the value of the contributions made by every single portfolio in this committee. As Director of Education, I was heavily involved in organising large-scale events, and working with our corporate sponsors. I have also been a cast member in the 2018 and 2021 Law Revues, and I wrote for the George Street Journal multiple times. I helped to write, and coordinate the 2021 Career Guide, and was published in ‘The Gavel’. I have competed in several competitions run by both the internal and external competitions teams. And I even rolled out of bed before 6am to get involved in running club and other wellness activities run by Sport and Health, and DCW (and I am certainly not a morning person).
I have loved my experience as part of the QUTLS this year, and I’d love to create the same positive environment for next year’s committee!
President ①
Matthew Adams
Hi everyone! My name is Matt and I’m a 4th year law and business (economics) student. I’m a huge nerd particularly when it comes to constitutional law and mooting. In my spare time I’m watching High Court AV recordings, writing for The Gavel, or cutting it up on the social touch field.
Currently as the Director of Internal Competitions, I have enjoyed being able to provide comps to our members and seeing them have an amazing experience learning and making new friends. Alongside this, I was also the 2021 Australian Law Student Association Client Interview Convenor. In both roles I have gained valuable experience with working and managing others within a volunteer organisation.
Having been on the 2020 and 2021 QUTLS committees I have been able to see the amazing work that we do, enriching the lives of our members. The QUTLS has played a large part in my QUT experience, and I am excited about the opportunity to be able give back to the society.
I want to serve the society by using my skills and experience in the role of President to help shape the QUTLS strategic direction. I also believe I would bring valuable leadership experience to the role and would help give guidance to other members of the executive and broader committee.
In recent years the committee has moved towards being more open and inclusive. I am committed to continuing this push, and to find ways to foster a better culture amongst our members. I would see it as my role to help the portfolios’ visions be realised and integrate it into the broader strategy of the society.
I currently work part time at HiQ and will reduce my study load if successful in gaining the role.
President ①
Maurice Mabiriizi
After almost three years at QUT, I have decided to serve my fellow students by standing for the Presidency. As a law student, I understand the problems that you face every day. I have spent so much time listening to concerns and coming up with solutions that will improve the functionality of our faculty. From units content quality to bringing the society to all students, these are the things most students find imperative, and they are the things I remain committed to FIXING.
I ask you that come election day, vote for Maurice Mabiriizi for QUTLS President.
President ①
Vwanganji Sichone
My name is Vee and I would like to nominate myself for President or Vice President or Director of Moot Club in 2022. Currently I am an Internal Competition Officer for the Law Society and I am heading into my final year of Bachelor of Law.
I have been lucky to get a role in the Society and it has given me so much. I have had the opportunity to make friends, to build confidence and to try things that I did not ever consider. The Society has empowered me to take the opportunities that are offered by the faculty, the Society and other external networks. I would like to give back to the community that has given me so much. During my year with the society I have been able to share various talents and time. In 2022, I will have even more capacity to give to the Law Society and that is why I would like to run for a T4 position.
Given my management, customer service and administrative experience, I am confident in my ability to effectively represent the Society. My experiences have given me organisation skills, work ethic, an ability to work with others and ability to work autonomously.
I know I have the knowledge and experience to do a great job as President. 2021 has been great and I enjoyed the time I have invested in the Law Society and look forward to being the President in 2022.
Vice President
Vice President ①
Alex White
My name is Alex and I am in my 5th year of a law and media and communications degree. I have been very involved in the QUTLS over my five years of uni, taking on a publications officer role in 2020 and the director of media and communication this year.
I feel like our portfolio has achieved so much this year, we have worked hard but also created a positive team environment and camaraderie amongst each other. I hope to bring my experience and knowledge to the management committee and help create a positive team environment for 2022.
My second preference would be to focus solely on the social media for the QUTLS, as director this year I’ve identified a number of areas for potential growth for our social networks and I feel like I have a lot to offer to this role. I also did a lot of work in social media this year so would therefore be able to hit the ground running straight away.
Vice President ①
Ashton Darracott
Hello! I'm Ashton and I am in my final year of a Law and a Creative and Professional Writing degree. My QUTLS journey began in 2019 as a Publications Officer, and in 2021 I held this position again. On top of my Publications duties, this year I have had the pleasure of getting involved by attending events, competing in competitions, playing social sport, and being present around campus and meeting people in the library. I have been inspired by the people I work with and have gotten to know in the committee, as well as meeting new faces this year and learning about the different experiences.
I am running for three positions, which you will read about in this document. Whichever position you deem me the most fit for, I will be honoured to serve the 2022 QUTLS committee, and QUT Law student community.
In terms of Vice President:
In my last year of university in 2022, I want to work towards providing the law student cohort with an organisation that helps them achieve their personal and professional growth. I believe I have the skills for this role due to my sociable yet dedicated and organised personality.
Listening. Empathy. Problem-solving. Rapport. Trust. Connection. Accessibility. Understanding. Support. Advice. Leading by example. Conflict management. Sound judgement. These are all the core qualities that a VP needs to elevate the Society to the next level. To give directors the platform to achieve the grand plans they have for making QUT Law the best university to study law. The 2022 committee and community can trust me to advocate for their ideas and their needs. As your VP, I’ll be there to empower everyone on the committee to be the leaders and the changemakers they want to be for the student body.

Secretary
Secretary ①
Alexa Roder
Hi Everyone! My name is Alexa Roder and I am nominating myself for the 2022 roles of Secretary, Director of Diversity, Culture and Wellbeing and Director of Education. I’m currently Diversity, Culture and Wellbeing Officer and I am finishing my second year of law.
I believe that my experiences and skills are well suited to the role of Secretary. I have experience as an administration assistant demonstrating my ability to support the management committee for 2022 as through the role I gained skills to help manage, organise, lead and support a team. My experience as Diversity, Culture and Wellbeing Officer supports these skills as I also have the understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the positions within the society. I am friendly and approachable, willing to serve the committee and QUTLS members to ensure the society is compliant with its legal obligations and make 2022 an incredible year for the society.
Secretary ②
Ashton Darracott
For many of the same reasons as I have spoken about in my nomination for VP, I believe that I would make an excellent Secretary. Naturally there are some differences between these two roles. I also believe that I have the specific skills to be the best option for Secretary. In summary, it’d be me and my pack of pastel highlighters against the world
The Secretary is officially tasked with keeping abreast of all the important legal, regulatory and constitutional obligations are met. This involves very close attention to detail, which I believe I can evidence with my editing and writing skills, especially such large documents like the Careers Guide and First Year Survival Guide.
I believe I have the skills to be a support for both the President in the strategic decision-making and direction of the committee, and the Vice President in managing the day-to-day affairs of the internal committee. I have seen over my time in preceding committees the importance of a society providing for the needs of all of its members and the diverse professional, personal, and academic needs our QUT law school has. This requires teamwork and advocacy skills, both of which I have demonstrated this year with Publications and also the mooting I have done.
I believe that I also have superior interpersonal skills that would be of benefit for conflict management and people management throughout the term alongside the VP. For these reasons, I’ll refer to my nomination for VP.
I also use a variety of software to manage my life. Google Calendar and Google Drive, Notion, Trello and Slack are my favourites. I am adept at these programs and love keeping on top to do lists. My organisational skills are also of the standard required to be an effective Secretary of the QUTLS.
Secretary ②
Matthew Adams
Hi everyone! Me again. Further to the skills and experience outlined in my nomination for president, I believe these are also applicable to the role of secretary.
As a director in 2021, I have had the opportunity to work closely with the current secretary and to gain an understanding of the role.
I believe I have strong organisational and communication skills as well as being very detailed orientated.
I believe I would be able to perform the duties of secretary well including its legal, regulatory and constitutional obligations.
I believe I would also work well to support the other members of the management committee and broader committee.
Treasurer
Treasurer ①
Jasmin Graves
I was first given the opportunity to join QUTLS as Health Officer and later was elected to the role of Director of Sport and Health. In both positions, I have worked hard to advocate for the health and wellness of law students at QUT. In the role of Treasurer, I will work to ensure all financial decisions are made with intentions to support the best interests of our members.
Those who already know me are aware of my passion for budgets, spreadsheets, and Microsoft Excel. I thoroughly enjoy evaluating decisions based on financial data and intend to use my skills to further the objectives of the QUTLS.
I am in my third year of a Law and Accountancy degree and work part-time in the Finance Department of a non-for-profit. I use accounting software to invoice contractors, process reimbursements, and oversee a variety of other financial transactions. I am excited to apply the skills I have learnt at work and in my studies to the role of Treasurer at the Law Society.
In my three years of study at QUT and an additional two at UQ, I have been heavily involved in student clubs and societies. This has included convening two cultural competitions at Cromwell College, being a student representative on both the Faculty Academic Misconduct Committee and Steering Committee for Academic Concessions, and being elected to the QUT Student Guild. At the QUT Guild, I worked in the Media Team to report on policies and governance matters.
My commitment to these past roles, passion for QUTLS, and experience in financial decision-making are all reasons why I believe I would make a fantastic Treasurer in 2022.
Thank you for your consideration, I hope to see you at the AGM!

Director of Creativity
Director of Creativity ①
Charles Platt
Hi folks, I'm Charlie, and I'm running for Director of Creativity and Law Revue Officer for 2022.
I am currently in my third year of study, and I have been heavily involved in the creativity portfolio since coming here, having been a core cast member in every single law revue that has occurred since I started in 2019. I strongly believe that now is the time to take up the mantle and to my part in shaping the Revue from an event into the true institution that it deserves to be. This year's was without a doubt the best yet, and whoever takes over next year (hopefully me) would be standing on the shoulders of giants.
In addition to law revue, I have extensive experience in other arts projects, with both amateur companies and collectives, especially QUT's own Vena Cava, having performed with them on several occasions (Talking to Brick Walls in 2020, The Next One as part of Freshblood Festival in 2021). I also have experience in the professional theatre field, having performed a leading role in Shake and Stir Theater Company's 2018 production of Much Ado About Nothing. Importantly, the contacts that I have established throughout these shows (particularly with Vena Cava) will allow me to use my position to ensure greater collaboration between our two organizations, which began this year in the form of a Law Revue improvisation workshop.
I have prior experience in running student societies, serving as Treasurer of the QUT Dungeons and Dragons guild in the 2020-21 year, a period which saw the guild expand from approximately 150 to nearly 500 members.
Cheers folks,
Charlie
Director of Creativity ①
Harry Jans
As convenor of the 2021 Law Revue throughout a period (where the role of Director of Creativity role responsibilities were generally completed by both convenors due to sub-optimal management conditions), I believe that I have an intimate understanding of the primary functions of the Director of Creativity and will be able to do it justice. I have very much enjoed working with the Law Revue in 2020 and 2021 and would like to facilitate its growth and development further in 2022. I think I can bring strengths to this role from the context I've had with it this past year. The George Street Journal is amazing, and I'd love to be able to coordinate things to make the editor's life easier. I believe the key to executing this role successfully is stepping back and being involved in a manner that caters to their wants and needs, and providing them with the best platform I can to let them do things the way they'd like to.

As the current Diversity, Culture and Wellbeing Officer, I have supported the 2021 Director for the past year and have gained an insight into the purpose of the role and the events the portfolio creates. I am passionate about the vision that this portfolio aims to achieve and hope to continue this portfolio’s reach with law students. With the help of 2022 DCW officers I want to create new events to help support and spread inclusivity across QUT law.
Director of Diversity, Culture and Wellbeing ①
Noam O’Reilly
I would like to represent the QUT Law Society as the Director of Diversity, Culture and Wellbeing. I am a fervent advocate of representation and equality within educational environments, and in the workplace, across backgrounds, identities, abilities, neurodiversity, and class. I believe inclusive environments benefit all, as they encourage understanding, empathy, broader world views and perspectives. As a gender diverse student with a disability `I understand the challenges faced by students who are seeking an equitable education and will endeavour to represent the broad spectrum of students within the QUT Law School.

I would like to nominate myself for the role of Director of Education. I hope to bring my experience as the Diversity, Culture and Wellbeing officer and use the knowledge I have gained supporting the Education portfolio in their events over the past year. I am passionate about helping law students have access to education about the legal profession and aim to continue the amazing work the 2021 QUTLS education team have achieved.
Director of Education ①
Courtney Howarth
Hi everyone!
As some of you may know, I’ve been around the QUTLS for a while now, firstly as a former Moot Club Officer, and one of the current Education Officers in the society. This coming year, I am primarily nominating for the position of Director of Education, followed by Education Officer.
Throughout the past couple of years (Covid allowing), I’ve been a pretty active committee member, and in my nomination statement last year, I spoke to my interest in the education portfolio as it is a means to deliver information and opportunities to all students - regardless of your age, background, or whether you have pre-existing contacts in the legal profession. I myself am a graduate entry law student, who grew up without contacts in the legal profession. I am currently working as an assistant in a barristers’ chambers, where I have been lucky enough to meet numerous legal professionals - all of whom have fascinating and diverse stories as to how they came to practice. Each of their stories has demonstrated the growing diversity of the legal profession and the importance of educating students about the vast range of practice areas and opportunities out there.
I am proud to have been involved in the education portfolio over the past year and I am quite eager to continue my involvement in this portfolio, as I believe it has been a fantastic mechanism for delivering information and networking opportunities to students who, like me, might not have friends or family in the legal profession already to guide them.
Director of Education ①
Madeleine Barry-Young
I have a wealth of relevant experience supporting my applications for the Director of Education and Education Officer roles. First, I have been extensively involved with the Law School’s mentoring program for three years, where I have formed meaningful relationships with first year students. I have also volunteered with the LLB Help Me program, where I supported numerous students in their academic endeavours. Hence, I have firsthand experience relevant to the roles’ responsibilities relating to such programs.
I am also a keen netball player. I have shown leadership by captaining multiple teams and my managerial experience developed through coaching and umpiring. In these roles, I developed efficient problem solving, decision making and conflict resolution skills. My teamwork and leadership abilities are particularly relevant to Law Society roles when coordinating with other law society Executives, the Faculty of Law and firms. Thus, I am goal-oriented and a spirited team player, who is driven to succeed.
In 2020, I was an Events Director for QUT 180 Degrees Consulting. Here, I worked with a team to organise an events calendar. We communicated professionally with
other executive members, diverse businesses and students to effectively coordinate events, ranging from networking experiences to end of semester parties. To ensure successful events, I received and delegated work efficiently. My past executive experience in a university environment, enables a seamless application of these skills to the Director of Education or supporting Officer roles.
Finally, I have considerable time to contribute to the role. My strong organisational skills and managerial experience ensure I am always prepared. I implement strict revision and final deadlines to ensure I produce work to a very high standard. My timetable is flexible, and I enjoy meetings in a formal boardroom or over coffee. I look forward to contributing to law student life at QUT.
Director of Events
Director of Events ①
Harvey Silk
Over the past few years I have immersed myself in the Brisbane nightlife including, but not limited to, events, festivals and larger scale corporate functions. I have been involved in promoting, marketing and networking to evolve SASH, which is an Australia wide music brand that brings together the widest variety of people. Through this and other experience in event management at the Gabba, I have organised and created logistics patterns for third party companies who cater for up to 35,000 people at events and have ran shifts which included 70 staff reporting to me. It is for this reason I am applying for the Events Director of the QUTLS for 2022 and I look forward to sharing my knowledge of the brisbane venues and nightlife scene, to host events throughout the year. With my ever-growing passion for connecting individuals and businesses to form large-scale events, I believe I would fit the role well. I also love being a part of a team and would be eager to join efforts with the other department heads, to give ourselves the best opportunity at providing the greatest events of the year. My previous history with teamwork has allowed me to develop a sense of acute recognition for allowing others to strive and giving everyone the opportunity to put their best idea forward. I hope to do this with the events team and form a successful unit for the QUTLS. I have dealt with negotiating the best deals for drinks and food packages at venues such as Maya Mexican (formerly Eleven Rooftop) Sixes and Sevens, Ibis rooftop, XCARGO and more recently, Emporium South Bank. It is with this experience, I wish to share with my fellow QUTLS people and look forward to becoming a part of the best society in QUT in 2022.
Director of Events ①
Oscar Davison
Hi Everyone,
My name is Oscar Davison, and I'm running for the position of Events Director 2022.
I was one of your events officers during 2021, and had a great time running events with Beck, Luka and Mia. We took a very 'everyone's involved' approach to the running of events in 2021; Luka and myself both heavily involved in the organising, planning and running of the 2021 events, I believe I am well equip to handle our events in 2022.
I assisted in the development, organising, and running of the 2021 Law Ball, 2021 Law Dinner, Pub Crawl - Sem 1, LetsGetRekt Sem 1 & Sem 2, along with multiple monthly bar nights.
I understand the pressures and duties associated with this role, and have dealt with multiple issues in the past year, in relation to QUTLS Events.
Thank you for your consideration,
T'aves Baxtalo,
Oscar
Director of Internal Competitions
Director of Internal Competitions ①
Brianne Mathias Beale
UNCONTESTED
My name is Brianne Mathias Beale and I am nominating myself as the QUTLS Director of Internal Competitions for 2022. I’m currently in my fourth year of a Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Laws degree and a current Internal Competitions Officer.
I’m ultimately in an extremely fortunate position coming from the officer role. I understand the ins and outs of how the portfolio operates from a logistical standpoint to teamwork collaboration, and have engaged with competitors closely this year to ensure a fantastic year of competitions. My role included consulting with sponsors, sourcing judges, and managing two key competitions of the various that the portfolio has run.
My interest in pursuing the Director role next year comes from a desire to provide law students with well-run competitions where students can effectively demonstrate their oral advocacy and lawyer skills alongside the opportunity to meet practitioners, receive invaluable feedback, and enhance their CV.
It would be an honour to contribute to the committee in 2022 and I hope you consider my candidacy.
Director of Media and Communications
Director of Media and Communications ③
Ashton Darracott
Being from the academic background that I am, the work of the Media Communications portfolio is my bread and butter. I am nominating thirdly for Media Comms because while I would love to support others with their ideas and running the society, I am nonetheless still brimming with new ideas for Media Comms on the social media and the publications streams.
Being heavily involved in the Media Comms portfolio has given me the experience necessary to lead the portfolio in 2022. This year, we successfully rebranded the magazine and worked as a team to deliver some of the highest quality publications the QUTLS has ever seen. If you have the chance, please take the time to download and have a read of the First Year Survival Guide, the Springboard Careers Guide, and the first issue of The Gavel.
I care deeply about keeping the window between the society and the law student cohort open so that all law students know about all of the amazing opportunities, events, and initiatives we run to make their time at university easier. I would not be who I am today without the amazing people I met on the committee last year, as well as those externally through being paired up with strangers in competitions, engaging with the early editing stages of 2021 Law Revue, and attending the social and education events. Media Comms is vital to this connection and it has made all the difference to me and my time in QUT Law. I want to both maintain and expand this reach and engagement with creative strategy and personal passion for those coming after me.
Director of Media and Communications ②
Morgan Larkin
My interest in the role of Director of Media and Communications stems from my Marketing background. Having completed a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) in 2019, and after working as part of an in-house Marketing team for over three years, I have extensively developed skills that will be an asset to the role of Director of Media and Communications. I have experience developing and executing campaigns across multiple channels, including print, social, EDM, and web. I have managed social media channels for brands large and small. For larger brands, key objectives included fostering engagement and further brand identity, while for smaller brands the focus was on growing a following and establishing brand community. I am no stranger to a Canva template, and am accustomed to wearing multiple hats, jumping in to assist and guide other teams and portfolios in the execution of brand vision and purposeful Marketing. Should I be elected the Director of Media and Communications, I see this professional experience being a strong asset to the portfolio and the broader QUT Law Society. I would personally find it immensely fulfilling to be able to use my knowledge and experience in this space through my work with the Law Society.
Director of Moot Club
Director of Moot Club ①
Christopher Doust
Hello! My Name is Chris Doust. I’ve nominated for the QUTLS Director of Moot Club for 2022. I want to encourage more QUT students to discover the excitement and satisfaction of mooting, that I have experienced this year, and to develop invaluable skills in advocacy throughout their degree. In the years prior to my enrolling in law, I have worked in several management and supervisory roles which have allowed me to develop a number of skills directly relevant to a Director position in the QUTLS.
As a Team Manager for Australia Post, I provided mentoring and career-development support to over 40 employees, providing invaluable experience towards the developmental objectives of Moot Club. I also developed my own skills in communication and stakeholder management, which will allow me to be an effective liaison between the Society, the faculty, and students. Through several hospitality management roles I learned to host complex events, while managing competing priorities. These skills will enable me to ensure the continuous delivery of Moot Club events, and the High School Moot, even in the event of unpredictable challenges, such as Covid-19.
With your support in electing me Director of Moot Club, I will bring these skills to aid my student-peers in becoming talented advocates, with the ambition and ability to competitively represent QUT in mooting. Please vote for me, Chris Doust, for Director of Moot Club. I appreciate your vote!
Director of Moot Club ③
Vwanganji Sichone
My name is Vee and I would like to nominate myself for President or Vice President or Director of Moot Club in 2022. Currently I am an Internal Competition Officer for the Law Society and I am heading into my final year of my degree.
I understand how essential the moot club is. As a member I have firsthand experience engaging with the resources that were provided by the mooting club this year and in previous years. I am truly passionate about the initiatives that this portfolio has promoted and hope to add to the environment that has been established by previous directors. Having participated in competitions, and assisted in the running of internal competitions, I have a passion for facilitating events and creating an understanding of competitions for members of the law society and QUT law students as a whole.
I want to continue to foster a nurturing environment where students feel comfortable to get involved with mooting and legal competitions. 2021 has given us the ability to run events online and in person. In 2022 we have the ability to run events in person for students who are internal and provide external students with the ability to engage with the moot club online.
My experience competing and facilitating competitions has given me the necessary experience to fulfill the role of Director of Moot Club. This year I have demonstrated my organisation skills and my ability to effectively communicate with my team, industry professionals and faculty.
Director of Sponsorship
Director of Sponsorship ②
Brianne Mathias Beale
My name is Brianne Mathias Beale and I am nominating myself as the QUTLS Director of Sponsorship for 2022. I’m currently in my fourth year of a Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Laws degree.
Throughout 2021, I have been an Internal Competitions Officer. This has meant liaising and collaborating with sponsors, alongside reaching out to solicitors, barristers, firms and judges throughout the year to judge competitions. I enjoy building these relationships and marketing what our QUTLS portfolios have to offer in collaborations that are mutually beneficial for both students and firms. This sparked my interest in the sponsorship portfolio.
I have background working in project management, international logistics and now in criminal law, and have a variety of experience building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders and executives. Essentially, I hope to be a part of a team that ensures the various portfolios have excellent sponsorship options, ultimately providing students the best opportunities.
It would be an honour to contribute to the committee in 2022 and I hope you consider my candidacy.
Director of Sponsorship ③
Director of Sponsorship ②
Luka Roppola
Please see my statement for Sponsorship Officer:
Hi everyone! My name is Luka and I am running for the role of Sponsorship Officer for QUT Law Society Committee in 2022.
As a QUTLS committee member for two years running, first as Merchandise Officer and this year as an Event Officer, I am extremely familiar with how the society functions. This has given me a fundamental understanding of how the society operates across each portfolio which I can utilise to drive greater sponsorship engagement across all happenings in the society. It has also given me insight into potential areas for new sponsorship opportunities that I am keen to explore, thereby further building the sponsorship portfolio in its second year of existence.
Having played an integral role in the successful return of all QUTLS events this year, I have demonstrated my dedication to the society and understand firsthand the crucial role it plays towards enriching the student experience. From my position as Events Officer I have shown proven coordination, attention to detail and ability to maintain professional relationships with external parties – all of which I can translate to a sponsorship role.
Outside the society I have been fortunate enough to participate in student experience programs at top-tier law firms and gain employment at one, so I believe being a familiar face to HR departments will assist in maintaining a cohesive relationship with key sponsors (or at least so they can put a face to the person emailing them at 11pm about their capacity for extra sponsorship money).
I have loved my time in the society this year and would be honoured to work towards the betterment of the society next year through developing current sponsorship relationships and forging new ones.
Thanks for considering my application!
Director of Sponsorship ①
Morgan Larkin
As the current Sponsorship officer, I am perfectly positioned to step up to the role of Director of Sponsorship. After being appointed to my current position in July, I have moved quickly to learn the ropes and establish connections with our major sponsors. With a strong background in in-house Marketing, I bring to the table professional experience in stakeholder management, from relationship building to navigating sticky situations with care to produce a mutually beneficial outcome. My work in this area has put me on both sides of receiving sponsorship pitches, and delivering collaboration proposals. As such I have proven capability at developing and overseeing the execution of collaborative agreements that transfers well to the duties of the Director of Sponsorship.
Most of my time as a student and developing professional has been spent in roles that require a strong focus on customer service. Having the necessaries of excellent customer experience ingrained in me, I have in focus the impression QUT Law Society is leaving on the firms, our sponsors, and their sponsorship experience with us. Should I be elected Director of Sponsorship, sponsor experience will be front of mind. This is of benefit to the QUT Law Society for securing sponsors and maintaining strong relationships for the furtherance of Society objectives; a benefit that trickles down by reputation to the law students QUTLS represents.
Director of Sport and Health
Director of Sport and Health ①
Tia Adermann
Hello!
This year I have had the privilege of dedicating my time, energy and efforts to the QUTLS as Sports Officer. In my role I organised and assisted in numerous events and programs for the promotion of general student health & well-being - including social sport events, exercise initiatives, exam packs, and other wellness initiatives.
I am passionate about creating a culture of wellness and positivity within our community and promoting healthy habits - which is especially vital given the high levels of stress, depression and anxiety law students and legal professionals experience.
From my extensive experience of the Sport & Health portfolio, as well as my energetic commitment to being Sports Officer, I believe I will succeed in the role as Director in 2022.
I welcome the opportunity to devote even more energy in the Director role, with the ambition to reach even more students, channel the portfolio toward wellness-orientation, and the further enhancement of overall student wellbeing & health.
I am cognizant of the importance of leadership, teamwork and personal responsibility required for the Director's role, in accordance with the QUTLS by-laws.
Officers
Abilities Officer ①
Chiara McGinty
I have selected to be an Abilities Officer as my first preference. I chose this position as I am a Deaf person. I believe as a Deaf person, I can bring attention and awareness from my position as a Deaf person. I also grew up having learnt Auslan and I think any person can benefit from learning Auslan, not just learning to use for communication purposes. I also went to schools that had special units and grew up with different type of disable people. I also want to show that being Deaf does not stop certain opportunities, as I have learnt French, learning Korean and I also play guitar. I would love this opportunity to meet other Deaf people that also take Law, and other disabilities and further my knowledge on different disabilities.
Abilities Officer ②
Jordan Paiva
The abilities officer role within the QUTLS is one I have sought after before and am currently going after again because ensuring those students within the law faculty can make the most of their university experience is one, I am committed to. I should explain why this is, and I’m happy to do so as it is one, I now wear with pride. I was diagnosed with OCD in early 2019 and this severely reduced my ability to participate in university life and its culture. Having largely recovered from it, I wish to work towards making sure no one else ever feels like they aren’t able to be a part of campus and more specifically, Law Society culture. Additionally, having worked within 4ZZZ and Caxton Legal Centre, I understand those who are less fortunate and differently-abled. I think this unique combination of professional and personal knowledge of how life is for those who are disabled places me in an excellent position to help those who are also differently-abled. I would aim to work with the disability department, QUT Guild and QUT counselling if possible, to make sure that the law students of QUT are at the best wicket to achieve their goals.
Abilities Officer ②
WITHDRAWN
Karuna Hooper
I would love the opportunity to work within the law society to develop my organisational skills, learn from existing members and make a positive contribution to the society for my fellow QUT law students and myself. Along with my law degree I am studying behaviour science(psychology) here at QUT which has intensified my awareness of the affect health conditions of all types can have on mental health and wellbeing. I have not lived with a physical disability but my own experiences with health conditions have impacted my life and academic journey. I hope to spread awareness and education about the ways we can all support students with different needs than us. As abilities officer I will assist the director of diversity, culture, and wellbeing with advocating for and supporting the specific needs of students with disabilities and various health needs and always strive to learn and improve the ways I do this.
Abilities Officer ①
Kunal Nimkar
Hi, I'm Kunal Nimkar, your current abilities officer for Semester 2, 2021. I am hoping to continue in my role into 2022. I started studying Law and Business straight out of high school in 2019, with an innate goal to show people that if given the right opportunities disabled students have the same talent and abilities as their able-bodied counterparts.
Before I continue, a little about me, I have Cerebral Palsy Spastic Diplegia and use a wheelchair. I have acquired this condition at birth and am now living life to the fullest. I have always been passionate about the treatment and support of those with disabilities especially in regards to education. Throughout my life, I have always grappled with the concept of inclusion in schooling.
"Inclusivity" seems to be the buzzword in the disability space as of late, but are we really being "inclusive"? Too often I experience tokenistic gestures of "inclusivity". We love to highlight disabled individuals on specific days or weeks throughout the year, but what happens on the other 365 days of the year?
What I would like to focus on going forward is a sustained focus on the needs and desires of those with disabilities, to assist them in excelling in their endeavours.
Being "inclusive" to me means focusing on the everyday, being able to perform and live life on the same level as my able-bodied peers. With this in mind, while I do aim to host specific events which highlight disabled individuals, akin to those hosted during Disability Action Week, it would be my ultimate goal to share and show the QUT community that disabled Individuals are just like every other member of society, worthy of the same opportunities, care and compassion.
Competitions Officer (x4) ①
Anita Wu
My name is Anita Wu (she/her) and I am currently completing my third year in a dual degree of Bachelors of Laws (Honours) and Bachelors of Business (Management). I am looking to join the QUTLS Committee, not only to gain valuable skills and expand upon my professional and personal connections, but to also give back to the society that has provided me with so much during my law degree.
I must admit, during my first-year of university I would simply arrive at campus for classes and then leave soon after, and by mid-year it was starting to feel like uni was going to be a 5-year monotonous process. It wasn’t until I started speaking to members of the QUTLS and hearing about the many events and opportunities provided that I started to get a real grasp of what uni could potentially be.
Since becoming involved with the many insightful networking panels and events that the QUTLS has provided and organised, I have been able to meet and befriend people with different and similar interests, all of whom were very welcoming, and gain a more holistic university experience.
I hope that in becoming either a Competitions Officer, External Competitions Officer or Mentor Officer within the QUTLS Committee I can aid in enhancing the university experience of others - just like it has and continues to do for me.
The experiences I have gained from my employment, schooling, community and family have given me the skills that I hope to use in my role as a successful officer.
My employment as an assistant manager at a restaurant requires me to provide assistance to the general manager with the execution of her tasks. These tasks include rostering and training duties, allocation of tasks to team members, aiding in the decision-making process, and liaising with and leading members of our team. In addition, this support role calls for me to have a strong organisational adeptness and the ability to work effectively in high pressure environments whilst prioritising tasks accordingly. I believe these skills can be utilised in the general duties of the Officer roles when assisting the Directors of the Portfolios.
My time in the hospitality industry has exposed me to a variety of different customers and people. This exposure allows me to utilise and attune my social and emotional intelligence on the daily to a vast number of people and provide exceptional customer service. I believe this essential skill will not only aid me in liaising with third-parties/external parties as an External Competitions Officer and Mentor Officer, but also give me an advantage when recruiting and approaching students to step out of their comfort zones and participate in competitions or the mentorship program.
I have also had experience assisting and organising fundraisers and events in my hometown community. One such example is at one of our town’s largest annual festivals, Jumpers and Jazz in July. This required me to participate and organise a group of volunteers to take surveys from those who attended the event for the organisers and Tourism Queensland. Furthermore, I assisted in preparation for the ANZAC Day Dawn Memorial Service and am a fundraising volunteer for the Women’s Legal Service Queensland and the Cancer Council’s PonyTail Project.
In addition to my passion for planning and organising events, I also enjoy working in a team environment. Throughout all my experiences I have come to recognise the importance of effective and clear communication when working in a team and how it leads to productive and quality outcomes. I believe that this attribute will aid me when working as part of the QUTLS Committee team and also reflects my ambition to work with other passionate and like-minded students.
Lastly, this semester I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to volunteer as a witness for the QUTLS Witness Examination Competition. During my time as a volunteer, I not only got to meet the amazing QUTLS Competitions Team, but I also got to see them in action, liaising with judges and barristers from the profession and making sure the competition ran smoothly, so that the competitors got the most out of the experience. This was an enlightening experience, and being able to see the competition’s team in action furthered my interest to become more involved with the Competitions Team as an Officer and a QUTLS Officer in general.
I believe that I would thrive off of the opportunity and challenge associated with these position, and my past and current experiences demonstrate that I would make a key asset to the QUTLS Committee. I thank you for your time and consideration of my application and I hope to be fortunate enough to join the QUTLS team in 2022.
Competitions Officer (x4) ②
Harrison Bass
Hi fellow L-Card holders! My name is Harry and I'm in my second year of studying a Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Laws dual degree. QUTLS has really come back with a bang after the pandemic and online learning last year with great events and competitions experiences. My experience with the Society has been so positive that I wish to put my name forward for Events Officer, Competitions Officer or First Year Officer. I believe an Officer role would allow me to continue the progress that has been made since the restrictions of 2020 while continuing to grow the great initiatives we have.
I am in a strong position to deliver as an Events Officer as I am passionate about the current and potential events QUTLS has to offer. Some of the great events I've been able to attend include, the 2021 pub crawl (see my profile picture for proof), law ball, law dinner and multiple monthly bar nights meetups. Through this, I have seen first hand how these enrich the University experience and help students create meaningful friendships and make connections in law school. This is more important than ever as many students have experienced the last year of university online. Therefore social events as a way to meet new people are valuable, especially as a way to support students mental health.
I also have extensive experience working effectively as a part of a team in my previous and current workplace. Both areas have involved working with others and delegating tasks to achieve goals and outcomes. Additionally I would love to see further growth of the Monthly Bar meetups as I believe these have been a great regular and casual social outlet for students.
The only thing I love more than our QUTLS events is our Competitions. I have had the opportunity to take part in almost every internal competition this year including the Negotiation Competition, the Junior Moot, Client Interview and the Sentencing Competition. I have also stepped in to be a witness for preliminary, semi-final, and final rounds of the Witness Examination Competition and was a stand-in competitor for multiple preliminary rounds in the Sentencing Competition. This exposure to internal competitions has given me valuable insights into how internal competitions operate. Additionally I have experienced first hand the value that internal competitions can have for students development in the areas of public speaking, writing and advocacy.
Finally, I had the opportunity to mentor two first years in Semester One which was an experience I thoroughly enjoyed. I believe this, alongside my recent first year experience (having been one myself in 2020) would make me a strong candidate for First Year Officer. Further, I would use this as an opportunity to continue strengthening the initiatives we have in place for first years while looking for further unique opportunities to extend information, education and support for students at the start of their Law School Journey.

Jake Lamb
Hello guys. My name is Jake and I am a second year Law and Finance student. I would love the opportunity to become the next Competitions Officer. I’ve felt that over the last two years, I have not embraced the fantastic opportunities that QUT has to offer nor sufficiently challenged myself to step outside my comfort zone, and I feel that there would be no better way for me to immerse myself in the fabulous university culture than to get involved in the Law Society. I have been to a few Law Society events in the past so some of you may recognise the face (mostly pub crawls I must admit so recollection may be hazy), but I’d love the opportunity to serve in the Law Society and become more involved. I am a very enthusiastic person, and I look forward to meeting many more of you, and I can assure you that if I was successful in being nominated, that I would grab the opportunity with both hands and give it my all.
Competitions Officer (x4) ①
Jun Ki Cho (Luis)
My name is Jun Ki (Luis) Cho and I am a first-year student studying Bachelor of Laws (Honours) at QUT. Over the course of the year, I have been involved in countless competitions that was organised by QUTLS, including the negotiation competition, first-year mooting competition, junior moot competition and client interview competition. Being involved in numerous competitions allowed me to connect with various competitions officers and directors. These connections allowed me to learn that the competition officers strive to organise competitions for students, for them to have the opportunity to participate in a diverse range of extra-curricular activities. This aligns with my strong ambition in joining the QUTLS, which is to provide students with competitions that allows them to experience the legal world that will come across their journey in their legal career.
I am highly organised, detail-oriented, and a conscientious team-starter. I can strategise and prioritise effectively to accomplish multiple tasks and contribute to the creation and execution of QUTLS competitions.
I have experience working as a student representative for PSIR (Political Science and International Relations) whilst on exchange, where I had to dedicate myself in volunteering and managing various school and public events in high-pressure situations (organising and enlisting the support of all members in aligning to succeed event goals), problem-solving, leadership (monitoring and training new members), adapting to constant changes (changes to events schedule), time-management, and being hard-working.
I have also been involved in the GUKSA (Griffith University Korean Society Association) in 2020 as an organising team member, where I have assisted the society to successfully organise and manage events. Leading the organising team, I was able to efficiently build loyalty and long-term relationships with the members of the society while consistently achieving to successfully arrange and coordinate the events.
Competitions Officer (x4) ①
Zachary Norkunas
Hello there. My name is Zac. I started studying business at QUT in 2019, and then transitioned to the Faculty of Law in 2020. I am nominating myself to be Competitions Officer, Moot Club Officer or Education Officer.
While studying law here, I have participated in QUTLS moot club workshops and I progressed to the semi-finals of the First Year Moot. I thoroughly enjoyed the collaborative yet competitive nature of mooting and how these events helped develop my practical legal skills. I also enjoyed attending the 2020 QUTLS Law Ball. My goal is to encourage QUT law students to engage in this community, and events like moots and the law ball are fantastic ways for students to collaborate with one another and make connections both within QUT and in the wider legal community.
Organisation and communication are two main aspects of each of the roles I’m nominating for. These are skills that I developed prior to attending university during my career as a chef. Having worked my way up to managing a 10-person team, I was responsible for planning the stock that the restaurant would require for each week. I also liaised with several suppliers. I feel that this experience makes me a suitable candidate for these roles.
Currently, I work two days a week, which will allow me to meet any needs of the position.
Diversity, Culture and Wellbeing Officer ③
Chloe Hammond
I am in my third year at QUT, studying Law/Business. I am passionate about inclusion and advocacy, as I wish to pursue a career in family law, and ultimately begin work in and around women’s health and safety in the community. With this, comes a general interest in supporting students from diverse backgrounds. I would be keen to facilitate events to bridge the gap faced by students experiencing hardship. I recently attended the LGBTQIA+ pride week event during the semester, which sparked an interest in me applying for this role. I also participated in River to Rooftop, where I was able to raise funds for Women’s Legal Service Queensland, an organisation I often volunteer my time to help. Currently, I am involved in my local Youth Advisory Group where I work closely with a member of Parliament. I am facilitating discussions within my community on the topic of Domestic Violence and Mental Health with other members, which I enjoy.
Diversity, Culture and Wellbeing Officer ②
Feba Philip
Having dealt with cultural conflicts throughout my life, the biggest support for me was having someone to connect to or relate with. It gave me the feeling that I was heard and not alone, and that is what I want to provide for our law students. I believe no one should have to go through it alone, whether they are dealing with financial hardships, personal issues or health related matters. I want to provide adequate and ample support for students from diverse backgrounds. In doing so, I want to make sure their interests and challenges are considered whilst also giving them a voice and making sure they are heard. It is indisputable that all our students should feel supported and that they should be presented with an equal amount of opportunities. Thus, I endeavour to bridge the gap and help our students through providing then with events and initiatives that aim at assisting them regardless of their background or issues they face. I firmly believe that I can work alongside the Director of Diversity, Culture and Wellbeing to give our students the support they need.
Diversity, Culture and Wellbeing Officer ②
Jacob Long
Hello everyone, If you have yet to read my Education Officer submission my name is Jacob Long. I’m a second-year student, so I’ve had a lot of time on my hands to get involved with several volunteering opportunities, law society events, and internal and external competitions. I also hope to apply for a Diversity, Wellbeing and Culture Officer as my second preference. As a gay man, I understand some of the prejudice faced by those who are different from what’s perceived to be “normal”. However, I’m a white cis-gendered male who can also pass as straight if given the opportunity. I do not fully understand what it means to have my existence be political. Acknowledging this, I recognise my privilege and give back to my community in many ways. As an LGBTI Legal Service volunteer, I participate in a lot of reform and work on cases dealing with discrimination. I try to understand the needs of my community as best I can, and I love what I do. I have also been involved with Out For Australia, they are another volunteer organisation that hopes to normalise queer expression in the workplace. Diversity, wellbeing, and culture to me mean inclusivity but also recognising that freedom from disadvantage is an advantage. While this may not be my first preference, my knowledge and work ethic will allow me to commit to the role and promote the well-being of all law students. If I am not elected to be an Education Officer, I would love to get involved with the diversity, well-being, and culture portfolio for 2022. Thank you for taking the time to read my application.
Diversity, Culture and Wellbeing Officer ①
Karuna Hooper
I believe I am a strong candidate for diversity culture and wellbeing officer because I want to contribute to and support the law society and fellow law students in any way possible. I know that mental and physical wellbeing is essential to success in any field what to speak of the task of studying a law degree. My personal background and situation have got me where I am today, but I have come to realise that many identities and challenges are often overlooked by decision makers. I would love the opportunity to work under the law society executive and director of diversity culture and wellbeing to develop my organisational skills and learn from the people who have made the society what it is.
As a member of the law society and diversity culture and wellbeing officer I will strive to represent and understand the needs of all QUT law students and provide support effectively.
Diversity, Culture and Wellbeing Officer ②
Nam-Tri Nguyen
As a second-generation Vietnamese immigrant, I have experienced the highs and lows of assimilating into the Australian student lifestyle. I moved from Singapore 9 years ago and was first introduced to the Australian education system as a high school student. Managing the culture shock at that stage of life was extremely challenging. Therefore, in this role, I would do my all to welcome students from all walks of life and make them feel included and appreciated, as this is something I have personally struggled with.
I understand first-hand the difficulties of no social connections or safe spaces, and the burden this isolation can have on an individual’s mental and physical health and wellbeing. Not only do I want everyone to be included and welcomed within their university experience, but I also want to create spaces in which students feel comfortable enough to celebrate their diverse identities. We have thousands of students at QUT, each with their own unique age, background, sexual identity, and this is something that should be celebrated and demonstrated through all facets of university life.
Education Officer (x2) ②
Chloe Hammond
I recently attended the ‘Getting Your Foot in the Door’ as well as ‘Meet the Profession’ this year, which were both very insightful and I would be interested to aid in these events. Particularly as I approach my fourth year, I have a keen interest in clerkships, as I, myself, begin to prepare. I would be more than willing to promote events which benefit all law society members and all flow on responsibilities that come with that. I appreciate the importance of students understanding career outcomes from an early stage, but also, the stress and confusion that may hinder that coming to fruition in the first instance. In this position, I would aim to ensure all needs are met of the Direction or Education, and that various career workshops are run throughout the year but, moreover, that they are also of very high quality. I think encouraging and promoting a sense of necessity about these events is key to success and I know little side-perks (like LinkedIn headshots) are also likely to increase popularity, and it should not deflect from the purpose of the event. I am a very organised person and I know what needs to be done, as well as what I want to be done for the collective.

Christian Coulthard
Hey I'm Christian, thanks for reading my statement! I'm a second-year grad-entry law student. I've made a bunch of amazing friends through QUTLS and I'd love to a part of the committee in 2022.
Firstly, I believe I'd make a great events officer. I have 7 years of experience in hospitality work, including 3 years working in UQ's Red Room bar. Working in Red Room gave me experience working at many UQU-affiliated events and functions and market day activities. For example, in 2019 I MC'd Oktoberfest at Red Room and helped run fun competitions such as keg toss and bratwurst eating. At UQU functions and events I'd often work alongside club execs to help facilitate drinks and food packages- I saw firsthand the amount of effort required to make a night run smoothly. I also regularly volunteer with Vinnies and help organise fun events for teenagers such as scavenger hunts, beach trips and camps. I believe my experience has provided me with transferrable skills for the responsibilities of this role, such as promoting and selling the L-card during market day and sourcing quotes for drinks/food packages. I'd love to bring everything I know to this position and help be a part of creating awesome QUTLS experiences like Law Ball, letsgetrekd, and the QUTLS pub crawl!
Secondly, I'd love to be an education officer. Like most law students, I'm aware of the importance of good grades and getting your foot in the door in the industry. I really enjoyed attending career workshop events such as meet the profession and found the careers guide incredibly valuable for my own understanding of the legal industry. In 2022, I would love to be a part of organising these workshop events and helping put the careers guide together, to help other students in achieving their best academically and professionally!
Finally, I think I'd be highly suitable for a role as publications officer. Before starting Law in 2020, I previously completed a BA at UQ majoring in journalism/digital media. I'm highly familiar with the requirements of effective news-style articles and I'm an avid reader and writer. I believe my prior experience here would help me to effectively fulfil the publications officer's duties of writing QUTLS newsletters and sourcing articles for the Gavel.
I'm looking forward to seeing you all at the AGM and hopefully becoming part of the team in 2022!

Hi everyone! My name is Ezna Rashid and I am in my fifth year of studying a dual degree in the Bachelor of Justice and Bachelor of Laws (Honours). I am writing to express my keen interest in securing a position as the Events Officer or the Education Officer for the QUT Law Society in 2022. I am seeking the opportunity to be a part of the QUT Law Society executive committee and to assist and support the team in any way I can by using my past experience in similar roles.
I am confident of demonstrating to QUTLS and its members my tenacity, resiliency and positivity with the view to achieving and exceeding the society’s objectives to the best of my ability. I pride myself for having excellent communication skills regardless of who I am expected to assist or liaise with. You will find me to be a strong team player. I am very dedicated to any project I undertake. I am currently a Social Events Officer for the QUT Justice Society, and a Research Member of Lawyers Without Borders Student Division at QUT.
In my role as a QUTJS social events officer, I have been responsible for booking venues and rooms, assisting with the logistics of social events, completing all designated tasks in a timely and efficient manner, and liaising with external contacts, including sponsors for social events. I have also been responsible for assisting in the organisation of events including, but not limited to, the QUT Psychology and Justice ball, the QUT x UQ x Griffith Masquerade Ball, and many other exciting and successful events this year. As such, I believe that I would be suitable for the role of assisting either the Director of Events or the Director of Education with the planning, organisation, and execution of QUT Law Society’s events or career workshops, and other initiatives for the upcoming year.

Jacob Long
Hello everyone, my name is Jacob and my first preference is to be an Education Officer for 2022. I’m a second-year student, so I’ve had a lot of time on my hands to get involved with several volunteering commitments, law society events, and internal and external competitions. My mantra is to ‘go big or go home’ and I hope to apply the same attitude to the law society in 2022. This year I’ve gotten involved in the law society as a Law Revue cast member, social volleyball player, attending a heap of society events, and participating in competitions such as moots, the negotiation competition, and sentencing competition. I’ve also sought time as an LLB Help Me Communications Officer, Out for Australia Student Outreach Coordinator and an LGBTI Community Legal Service volunteer. Collectively, this has taught me the importance of teamwork, commitment, and time management. Complimentary to the education portfolio, I have also become well versed in liaising with legal professionals. Exposing myself to these roles has provided a steep learning curve. However, early in my degree, I was told to ‘embrace the uncomfortable’ and I’ve been very uncomfortable ever since. The education portfolio provides vital knowledge for every law student. Skills like networking, the structure of competitions, and writing a proper CV and cover letter are typically overlooked and yet are critical. I have a passion for ensuring other students who don’t have any familial relationship or connection to the industry, like myself, feel confident in securing a job. I wish to encourage more students to challenge the steep learning curve of throwing themselves into the industry. Thank you for taking the time to read my application and I hope I can be a part of the education portfolio for 2022.

I have also attended various educational events, such as the clerkship symposium and meet the profession, which offered a one-stop shop for networking and careers related. This aligns with my strong ambition in joining the educational officer team, as I want to provide a diverse range of workshops, seminars, information and career events to enrich students’ professional development. I would like to aim to be a bridge between university and the real world, as well as inform students on potential career and mentoring options available by organising various educational events. I am highly organised, detail-oriented, and conscientious team-starter. I can strategies and prioritise effectively to accomplish multiple tasks.

As someone who has been substantially involved in QUTLS this past year, I feel and officer position is a great way to further immerse myself in not only the Law faculty, but QUT as a whole. As a finance and law student, I feel I am uniquely skilled, and thus highly suitable for the financial officer position. Additionally, I have experience in, and take great joy in participating in the education and social events the QUTLS has posted, and look forward to being able to submit my own input into these amazing events.

Rida Idris
I will be a valuable addition to the Law Society as I have been an officer for two different societies before (LWOB and QUTEFS) and I enjoy being part of a team and collaborating with other students on projects. I am reliable, detail-oriented, dedicated and efficient and I enjoy working with others. I would like to be a part of the Law Society since I would like to meet other people who are also passionate about their Law degrees and because I enjoy volunteer work. I currently volunteer at a community legal centre (HUB Community Legal), the DFV Reception Desk at Ipswich Magistrate's Court, the Indooroopilly Uniting Church for assisting Afghani refugees with their visa applications and I also complete volunteer research for the Council to Homeless Persons Queensland. One of my big passions is writing, I enjoy producing content, particularly research content, and I have come 2nd place in the LWOB Essay Writing Competition in 2020. I would definitely enjoy producing content for the Law Society and helping others achieve their goals and make immersion into QUT Law and easier and more enjoyable experience.
Overall, I am dedicated, passionate about my studies and enjoy working with others and I am excited to see what QUTLS offers in the future!

Hi, my name is Yolanda, and I am running for Education officer. I have strong teamwork skills built up through volunteering on political campaigns and working in retail. On the campaign trail I have taken an active role in training new volunteers and assisting them with getting involved in their local campaign and branch. This has made be eager to help other students learn about the many avenues that they can pursue in their careers, and how the law society can help them achieve this.
Education Officer (x2) ③

Cheers folks,
Charlie

I have selected to be a Events Officer as my third preference. I wanted to join Events as I like to undertake numerous different roles in planning and creating events. I also wanted to join engage in like-minded individuals and bounce ideas off and collaborate on problem-solving to find the best solution.

Hi everyone! My name is Emily and over 2021 I have been part of the QUTLS committee as Social Media Officer. I originally joined QUTLS as a way to network and be more involved in university, but have found more through great people and events held along the way. Nominating for Events, Sponsorship and External Competitions Officer, I know I can apply what I've learnt through the year as Social Media Officer to increase our reach and engagement for the portfolio's events (whichever portfolio that may be!). Continuing my involvement in the QUTLS for 2022 is something I would be stoked to achieve, thanks!

Ezna Rashid
WITHDRAWN
Events Officer (x2) ①

Hi, I’m Harry and I’m running for the position of Events Officer. In terms of experience, when I was doing my previous degree, I held a position on the Griffith screen society which involved the organisation and hosting of fortnightly screenings and trivia nights as well as large start and end of year functions, very similar to Law Ball. Basically, I have experience in an analogous position and think that it would be useful for the committee. I’m willing to spend time sourcing venues and entertainment for different events and have plenty of experience through my prior degree working together with a team to achieve a larger goal. I know that the events that get put on are the highlight of many students’ year and I would love to be a part of the team that can create that for people.
Events Officer (x2) ②

Henry Sinclair
I am a first year law student at QUT, having previously studied and completed a Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. There I studied composition, involving the ideation, creation, recording, and editing of my volume of work - an hour's worth of music for each year of my degree. This was a very fulfilling undertaking, as it allowed me to find my voice as a creative person, and develop a lot of team leadership skills along the way.
During my time at QCGU, I spearheaded many creative events, taking both a performance and managerial role. This primarily included concerts and performances of a professional standard, for which I was director - in charge of organising venue, creative direction, liaising with lights, stage, and audio recording crew, advertising, editing the program, and ticket sales. These events were very successful, which was attributed by my program director to my organisational and creative skills. This, I find, is the area I excel best in – where organisation meets creativity.
Further to this, I often submitted my own pieces in these concerts. This involved writing my own music and organising rehearsal schedules for performers, and providing creative direction as to the desired sound and expression of my piece. I find collaboration in this way to be one of the most rewarding experiences, and I learnt a lot from not only being a performer, but by being behind the curtain as well!
Around my studies at GCGU, I also wrote, directed, scored, and performed in two award-winning short films. Both films were made in time intensive environments - a total of 18 days in the creation of both films from start to finish (which is extremely short for those familiar with film!). This time limit showed me the value I can bring to team-oriented roles and projects - efficiency, clear communication skills, decisiveness, and focus on the clarity and vision of our collective work. These films have since found great success in the short film circuit, due to my combined efforts with my producer to further create advertising materials and meet deadlines for submission, as well as working with the rest of my team to make produce further edits and rescores to improve our work as much as possible. I learnt a lot about myself in these roles - not only as a leader, but as a worker in a team full of equally passionate people.
As an artist coming into law school, I was very intent on being involved as heavily as I can with the Law Revue - my performance background, script writing, direction, and people skills, along with my intense desire to make an absolute buffoon of myself on stage are to blame. Regardless of whether I am granted a position in QUTLS, you'll definitely see me on stage next year doing whatever stupid thing I'm asked to do!
To conclude, I believe my creative edge, script working, rehearsal organisation, performance, directorial, liaison, ticket sales, and teamwork skills would make me an ideal candidate for the Law Revue Officer Role.
I also feel that these same experiences and skills would make me an ideal candidate for an Events Officer; bringing a creative and fun spark to the management of the law ball/dinner, pub crawl, and end of semester celebrations.
Either way, I'd be honoured to be considered for either role. I have a very particular set of skills (skills I have acquired over a very long career, skills that make me a dream for people like you), and I would love to put them to use for QUTLS!
Events Officer (x2) ③
Luka Roppola

Hi friends, I am nominating for social media officer, events officer and health officer for the year of 2022.
I have been involved in the society this year as merch officer and am keen to move into a new role and use the skills I have accrued this year. I am particularly confident in my time management skills with uni, work and the society and look forward to practicing this in 2022.
Social media officer is my first preference as I believe I would be super engaging and active on QUTLS socials and look forward to implementing some new weekly traditions on the QUTLS stories.
I work well in a team and am excited to work with the 2022 team!

Hi, my name is Yolanda, and I am running for Events Officer. I have strong teamwork skills built up through volunteering on political campaigns and working in retail. On the campaign trail I have taken an active role in training new volunteers and assisting them in getting involved with their local campaign. I have organised pre-poll rosters and set up training sessions. I am excited to help organise Law Society events and the fun that they provide to all students.
External Competitions Officer ②
External Competitions Officer ②
Dominic Thomas
Hello all, my name is Dominic Thomas and I am a Laws/Business student and law clerk. It is a privilege to be given the opportunity to present myself as candidate for the 2022 QUTLS elections. I have an exceptionally strong interest in the operations of the QUTLS and as a seasoned third-year student, I believe that I am uniquely positioned to serve you with distinction and fulfil your expectations as a governing officer of your student body. I nominate myself for Publications and External Competitions Officer.
It can be said that competitions are the lifeblood of the co-curricular academic experience; an opportunity to prove oneself in such fields as academia, sport and mooting. Competitions are often one of the most enjoyable experiences a university student can have, creating everlasting friendships and enduring professional connections. Potentially overlooked in comparison to the standard university competition, external competitions are of equal importance as a university experience. The opportunity to socialise with and compete against external groups, be it local, national or international universities is an opportunity second to none. These external programs are an opportunity for students of all experience levels to compete in events such as intervarsity moots and international case competitions. These amazing events are truly a preparation of QUTLS members for real-world practice, an opportunity to perfect international communication and competent legal practice.
I believe that I would be an excellent fit for the role of External Competitions Officer as I have excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and communication skills. The ability to organise large hoards of competitors together in conjunction with collaboration between numerous external partners at once is an ability that should not be overlooked by you, the voter. I strongly believe that I possess these essential qualities. It is for these reasons and more that I believe that you should elect me as your representative External Competitions Officer.
Thank you once again for considering my application with sincerity and I look forward to proving myself worthy of a position within your governing body.
As always, Go Tigers!
Dominic Thomas.

Fahim Rahman
I wish to be finance officer in the QUT Law Society in 2022. I have seen the amazing opportunities the QUT Law Society provides for aspiring law students with the various events they run. I have benefited from these events in a great manner and wish to contribute to this cause so fellow peers can gain the amazing insight I have.
With the completion of my economics degree in 2021, I have always been exploring the know-how of economies and business and especially interested in business analytics. Furthermore, the experience I gained as Treasurer at two QUT clubs (QUT Running & QUT LINC) in 2021. Knowledge as an economics graduate and Treasurer at 2 QUT Clubs provides me with the requisite knowledge to adequately fulfil this role.
And ultimately, I wish to be involved in a an amazing committee working towards a great cause!
Finance Officer ①
Jake Lamb
Hello guys. My name is Jake and I am a second year Law and Finance student. I’d love to be the next Finance Officer due to my experience in the banking industry with St George Bank with whom I currently work for, and my genuine passion for personal financial management. I consider myself to be highly competent with financial management, and an area I hope to become more involved in once I graduate. My banking experience has allowed me to develop skills in responsible and compliant financial decision making and cash handling procedures, and my personal financial interests outside of the workplace have meant that I am very skilled and creative with budgeting, and I am able to effectively manage financial records. I have felt that over the last two years, I have not embraced the fantastic opportunities that QUT has to offer nor sufficiently challenged myself to step outside my comfort zone, and I feel that there would be no better way for me to immerse myself in the fabulous university culture than to get involved in the Law Society.

Finance Officer ②
Oriel Hull
As someone who has been substantially involved in QUTLS this past year, I feel and officer position is a great way to further immerse myself in not only the Law faculty, but QUT as a whole. As a finance and law student, I feel I am uniquely skilled, and thus highly suitable for the financial officer position. Additionally, I have experience in, and take great joy in participating in the education and social events the QUTLS has posted, and look forward to being able to submit my own input into these amazing events.
Finance Officer ①
Reuben Arnold-Nott
I am in my second year of Law/Comms and would love to get involved in the Law Society in the role of a Finance Officer or Sponsorship Officer for 2022.
In 2020 I was Treasurer for the UQ Inter-College-Council (ICC). I have experience setting budgets, maintaining financial records and ensuring responsible financial management for the committee, which at the time had over 2,000 members. I was also required to amend the budget and affiliation fees to compensate for the effects of coronavirus on the colleges. I was required to liaise with a bookkeeper and the heads of colleges each month to ensure the committee finances were in order. All in all, my experience as Treasurer of the ICC taught me valuable skills in leadership, teamwork, committee etiquette, and finances!!, and I am confident that this experience will allow me to provide valuable assistance to the Law Society Treasurer as a Finance Officer.
I am also nominating for the position of Sponsorship Officer. I have experience reaching out to sponsors and patrons for a variety of charitable events and organisations including Surf Life Savers, Worlds greatest shave, Movember, and Scouts. While I understand that the Sponsorship Officer does much more than just seek sponsorship, I am sure that my experience in this area will be of use in assisting the Director of Sponsorship. My key characteristics that make me suitable for this position are my people skills and communication. While these skills are important for any position, I imagine that they are critical in a role that maintains a positive relationship between QUTLS and sponsors with regular contact. In summary I do have experience in seeking sponsors for charitable causes, and I am confident in my communication and people skills. I am sure that I would be a valuable assistant to the Director of Sponsorship and a worthwhile addition to the QUTLS committee in 2022.
Finance Officer ③

Yolanda Krygsman
Hi, my name is Yolanda, and I am running for Finance Officer. I have previously worked in retail where I have been responsible to balancing tills, placing orders, and ensuring correct flow of cash when completing lotto sales. I am eager to work with the elected treasurer in assisting with the QUTLS finances.
First Year Officer ②
Allison Kricker
For this election I have applied to be either a Social Media Officer, First Year Officer or Law Revue Officer. I wholeheartedly believe my past and current experience shows that I am a strong candidate for all of these positions. For the first position, I have extremely relevant experience due to being employed as a Social Media Assistant (SMA) at QUT for the QUT First Years Facebook group. Here, I have been responsible for moderating content, membership requests and answering queries around busy periods such as Orientation Week. In the past year I have also been involved as a Youth Reference Group member at headspace, Strathpine where I have assisted promotions and illustrations for their Instagram page. To find past examples of my work, please visit https://allisonkricker.wixsite.com/website. From my SMA role I have gained knowledge of first year students as an audience and understand the overall student lifecycle. This knowledge carries over well to the second role I have applied to, First Year Officer. I would also suit this second role due to my experience as a volunteer QUT Connector. For the two years I have been a Connector who is regularly involved in Orientation Week and Kickstart. These are events which focus on integrating commencing students into their new university life at QUT. Finally, I am a student who studies film alongside law. In my film degree I have been involved in organising student film sets. I would love to build upon this experience as a Law Revue Officer.
First Year Officer ②
Chiara McGinty
I have selected to be a First Years Officer as my second preference. I am in my third year at QUT but my second year doing Bachelor of Laws. I wanted to show my experiences into coming into Law and give insight to how a first-year should expect coming into a law degree. I originally did a Bachelor of Justice in the hopes of doing a Law degree.
First Year Officer ②
Christopher Doust
If I am not successful in my nomination for Director of Moot Club, I further nominate for the position of First Year Officer, under the Diversity, Culture, and Wellbeing portfolio. As a student in my 30s, having recently completed my first year of law, I am uniquely positioned to be an experienced and supportive representative for new students. I want to minimise stress and confusion for QUT’s new law students in 2022, whether they come straight from high-school, or if they’re seeking to re-skill for a new career. In either case, transitioning to university can be challenging, so it is exciting to have the opportunity to make someone’s first year memorable (for the right reasons)!
My career experiences in mentoring and development as a Team Manager for Australia Post will, again, translate well here to the opportunity to work with my first-year-peers and help them to set and achieve their university goals.
I am a passionate advocate for others, and thrive on helping others to succeed. If elected as the First Year Officer, I will apply this both through support and advocacy for first year students, and by unconditional support for the Director of Diversity, Culture and Wellbeing. Please vote for me, Chris Doust, for the position of First Year Officer. Thank-you for your votes and support.
First Year Officer ①

We all know the struggles of being a first-year law student. It’s overwhelming, challenging and can even seem impossible at times. It is not easy, and I believe that no one should have to go through it alone. If it wasn’t for the support from the QUT Law Society, I wouldn’t have gotten through my first year of law school. I want to provide future first years with this same support. I want to make sure I am there to assist in their transition into university through creating a sense of belonging within our faculty and providing them with undivided support every step of the way. Whether it is being a point of contact or a friendly face for first year students, I want to be there for our students.
Through my time as a mentor for yLead, I have come to understand the importance of providing students with opportunities that encourage their involvement, that give them a sense of belonging and allow them to flourish. Thus, I want to assist in organising events and initiatives to achieve just this. In assisting the Director of Diversity, Culture and Wellbeing, I want to make sure first years feel like they have a voice within our community and that they will be heard. I endeavour to ensure that first years are supported no matter what they are going through and to ease their transition into the next chapter of their lives.
First Year Officer ①
Hannah Clerc
I will make an excellent First Year Officer because my personal strengths of kindness and generosity suit this role where supporting first year students and easing the transition to university is key. I am often the ‘mum friend’ in my friendships. I am prepared for anything a friend may need – whether a snack, a tissue, a tampon, or a listening ear. I am ready to provide a friendly face to first years as I am welcoming and easy to talk to. Plus, I am often told that I have a very calming presence, which I’m sure will come in handy when providing a point of contact for nervous and stressed students.
I believe as a third-year student in 2022, I will be perfectly placed to assist first year students as I can balance remembering the hardships of first year with the knowledge and experience I gained from my past two years at uni. I also remember engaging with the first-year guide, the mentor program and the first-year social events and would love to help first year students in 2022 in a similar way to how these events assisted my transition to uni. Group assignments have also shown that I enjoy collaboration and working in a team, so I am keen to collaborate with the other members of the Diversity, Culture and Wellbeing portfolio. I also look forward to being more active in the QUTLS. This year, I committed to the Law Revue and had a wonderful time meeting with fellow law students. I hope that by joining the QUTLS committee, I can expand my law network and make more friends in the law faculty and encourage first year students to get involved and do the same.
First Year Officer ③
First Year Officer ③
Karuna Hooper
I would love the opportunity to work within the law society to develop my organisational skills, learn from existing members and make a positive contribution to the society and the QUT law community. I am a strong candidate for first year officer because I am a dedicated and welcoming person and want to make every new QUT law student feel welcome and supported. I am currently experiencing my first year here and QUT, in a new city and feeling both lucky to be here and overwhelmed at times. The law society plays an important role in preparing first years for studying law at QUT and providing us with opportunities and learning experiences. Most importantly the law society is vital to creating a sense of community for new students and I hope to contribute to this as first year officer.
Gender and Sexuality Officer ③
Hannah Clerc
I believe I am well suited to the role of the Gender and Sexuality Officer because of my passion and interest in these very personal areas. The nuances of gender and sexuality have fascinated me since high school, and I aim to continuously learn and deepen my understanding about these important facets of a person’s identity. My open-mindedness is an important strength that I will bring to this role as I consider other perspectives and ideas outside of my own experience when making decisions and emphasise the diverse needs of our community. In this way, I can use my beliefs to advocate for and better support gender and LGBTQIA+ equality as well as raise awareness of the challenges students face due to their gender and / or sexuality.

Jordan Paiva
Having been published in the Queensland Parliamentary Library, almost published in an academic journal, submitted a pending article to 'The Gavel' and worked copywriting positions, I am well versed and experienced in the world of publishing and writing. As the position requires one to source 3-4 articles for the Gavel, knowledge and proficiency for writing is essential. The types of writing under my belt range far and wide, from creative works and analysis, more personal works such as a written vignette into my struggle with my OCD diagnosis, copywriting social media posts and finally, legal analysis. My writing exploits can be found on my website which can be found here: https://jordanpaiva39.wixsite.com/kjb103jordan/about-me. Another element of the publications officer role is the contribution to the creations of the Law Societies publication front covers and assisting at photoshoots. I am experienced in producing and refining publication designs, having completed and submitted an image overall portfolio for the charity group 'Agility Dogs'. This can also be found here https://c952c30c-d4fc-4103-5ff4e18a341212.filesusr.com/ugd/c6e4a8_9912343058504075983e09186c36e424.pdf. Additionally, I have worked within the photography world to create creative portfolios so I have an understanding of what makes a particular photo catch the eye and what doesn't. Finally, the responsibility of assisting the director of Media and Communications with the production and distribution of the QUTLS newsletter isn't a mountain too high for me to climb, having worked within social media and know-how to effectively distribute posts to ensure the maximum outreach. In closing, I am a well-experienced individual for the role who hesitate to take the role on and make the publications of the QUTLS the best it can be.
Much like my bid for the disability officer position, my suitability for health officer centres around my experiences with OCD. Having been a sufferer of a serious mental health condition, I can empathise and know personally how isolating it feels when during the semester and having mental health issues play up. My aim should I be successful would be to spread a message that invigorates and inspires those who are feeling less than able to not give in and push through but also make sure they can ask for help when it's needed and not be afraid to do so. Having this personal experience puts me in a unique position to come up with ideas and initiatives as required by the position which are uniquely targeted and pertinent to the role of the QUTLS Health Officer. My experience with copywriting and increasing the reach of social media posts would be of great assistance to the Director of Diversity, Culture and Wellbeing in spreading a strong health message from the QUTLS. In closing, should I be voted in, I can assure every one of the students within the law faculty that I will work in their best interest to make sure they are fully fit and able to succeed in their studies at QUT (and maybe make some friends along the way!)

Braydon Clow
Hi there, my name is Braydon, Secretary of the QUT Law Society.
Over the year I have built a small list of big tasks for the next IT Officer. I am the perfect person to implement these as I have a great understanding of the Society’s technological position both internally and externally. I see the big picture surrounding the Society and therefore know the priorities that will best benefit our members. The tasks include the revaluation of systems, fine tuning the website and creating a webstore. I am no programmer; but this is not something the role requires. I have designed websites using Figma and I am a big proponent for online productivity systems.
Thank you for considering my nomination. I’ll see you at the AGM!

Cheers folks,
Charlie

I was thrilled to step up as a Convenor for the final three weeks before the 2021 Law Revue and build on the great work already done by Emma and Harry. I had the opportunity to hit the ground running and gain significant insight into the administrative element of organising the Revue, including marketing and ticket sales, budgetary considerations, and communicating with the theatre. Further, I demonstrated my strong capacity for leadership and organisation by taking on the coordination of filmed sketches and props as my primary responsibilities, as well as assisting in coordinating rehearsals and communicating with the cast in the run up to the show. I don’t have an enormous resume of theatre experience beyond being a cast member in the 2020 and 2021 Revues, as well as a keen Drama student (the highest overall achieving senior Drama student in Queensland in 2017) and loyal member of the choir in high school. That said, I believe that the Law Revue Officers do not necessarily need to be the most technically skilled and experienced thespians – rather, the Officers should be approachable, organised, good-humoured and driven to include and empower others. These are some of my greatest strengths, as I believe those involved in the 2021 Revue would attest to. I am wholeheartedly-committed to working harmoniously within the Creativity Portfolio and the Society at large, and drawing on my own skills and the skills of others to continue the legacy of the QUTLS Law Revue. I hope that I will be successful in my application and have the opportunity to ‘start what I finished’ this year. Either way, I’m already looking forward to sharing the stage with the 2022 Revue cast and putting on another great show!
Law Revue Officer (x2) ①
Harrison Megom
Hi, I’m Harry and I’m running for the position of Law Revue Officer. To give a brief outline of my skills, I have a background in the creative arts, I’ve been acting and performing on and off since I was 8, I have a degree in film-making where I focused primarily on script-writing and production management, taking on responsibilities where I organised locations, budgets and managed other members of the team in ensuring they completed their roles. This year, I participated in the show and as part of that co-wrote a couple of sketches and helped workshop a few others to make them punchier and better for time. In regard to what I hope to bring to the show, I want to use my background in film to organise some writer’s rooms to help build confidence in the new writers and add levels of consistency and cohesiveness to the show, as well as utilise the friends I have from my film days to improve the video quality of the sketches. Also, it’s a very social event, when you’re working on a project with people for that long you need to be friends, so I hope to facilitate some events that allow for the cast and crew to bond outside of the show. Honestly, I just had a great time being a part of the show this year and want to be involved in next years production to ensure that it lives up to the quality of the performance that we put on this, and to build on that good reputation and bring this show into a league of its own.
Law Revue Officer (x2) ①
Law Revue Officer (x2) ①
Nam-Tri Nguyen
Since graduating from high school, I have developed a love for all things media related – e.g., attending live music gigs, musicals, stand-up shows, you name it. Not only am I inspired by the stories and messages these artists convey, but I am also moved by the sense of community these mediums create (especially for people who feel unrepresented in mainstream media).
My biggest regret has been neglecting any creative endeavours due to academic pursuits. Therefore, in 2022, I am looking forward to honing my creative skillset alongside my studies to pursue a more balanced and fulfilling career.
I am aware that I lack experience working in an artistic environment, but I am no stranger to the arts industry. My favourite hobby is supporting the live music scene – e.g., local bands at the Brightside, free gigs at Lefties. I also appreciate different forms of comedy, spanning from local Brisbane stand-up and sketch comics, to touring acts like Aunty Donna.
I was impressed by the way in which the QUTLS 2021 Law Revue fused both comedy and live music together in their production and have been incredibly inspired to join the cast in 2022 ever since. I am particularly interested in the backstage management and pre-production preparation, hence my application for Law Revue Officer.
Regardless of the outcome of my application, I will continue to support QUTLS especially in participating in the Law Revue.
Mentor Officer ③
Mentor Officer ②
Curtis Wenzel
Curtis who is an overly avid thrill-seeker and Virgo by birth - who sucks at Vigoro, is naturally [over]competitive, organised and motivated; and, is seeking election to either Sports Officer, Mentor Officer or Merchandising Officer.
Although in high-school Curtis could barely throw a ball or javelin to save his own life (and was actually socially distanced from the rest of the class to preserve their lives during javelin, due to his throws turning the sharp spear-headed javelins into boomerangs), he now ironically seeks election as sports officer in a last ditch bid to show the world that he can very much ‘sport’.
Each Wednesday you can usually find Curtis running with mates from QUT to either New Farm Park, or when the weather isn’t right (due to uni related stress), a longer distanced Hamilton run (if he remembers that damned asthma puffer). Most days due to his uncompromising commitment to financial frugality (and for mental health) Curtis slides into his most attractive lycra and cycles into uni for an eventful day of swaying side to side in the Law Library’s level 4 stand-up computer desk listening to either Polaris or Brittany Spears: with no in-between.
Due to the numerous benefits of engaging in sports, including the tremendous impact physical exercise has on mental well-being, Curtis would LOVE to see an increase of law students engagement with physical activity and to make this realised, he seeks election as sports officer with the QUT Law Society.
For the position of Mentor Officer, Curtis would love to see the wholesome growth of those around him academically, socially, mentally and physically. Curtis firmly believes that through his legal experience in both absolutely fantastic workplaces, as well as those workplaces to the lesser where he was exposed to sadistic superiors, Curtis is able to positively mentor all those who approach him; by way of conversation over an extra strong English brekkie or earl-grey, a run, walk, or cycle.

Throughout the academic world, the academic journal has historically been and continues to be the paramount method of professional communication. Such a document, be it in the field of medicine, science, engineering and chiefly law, allows professionals to communicate amongst themselves and update each other on the academic state of their respective professions. QUT is no exception and I believe that all QUTLS publications, from Torts Illustrated to the QUTLS newsletter to the newly-minted Gavel have a strong role to play in the formation of well-informed legal professionals. While I am yet to publish a work in any of these aforementioned mediums, I am an avid reader of all three and greatly appreciate the work that goes on behind the scenes to produce such informative pieces. I believe that I would bring this reader expertise to the role of Publications Officer, along with a creative and academic side I believe substantially useful in selecting appropriate works and creating appropriate cover material.
I hope that you select me as your Publications Officer, a role I have had my eye on for some time now. I would serve with distinction and endeavour to further the QUTLS’s progression into the academic publication sphere. Despite being a new project, I have thoroughly enjoyed The Gavel and one day hope to be published there myself. To be at the helm of such important staples of the QUTLS operations, its frequent publications, would be a great honour and I look forward to representing you with distinction.
Moot Club Officer ③
Christopher Doust
If I am further unsuccessful in my nomination for First Year Officer, I finally nominate for the position of Moot Club Officer. For the reasons outlined above, in my nomination for Director of Moot Club, I believe that I am an outstanding choice for this position, and have the ability to provide strong support to the Director in operation of the club, and hosting of its many events throughout the year.
Please vote for Chris Doust to be your Moot Club Officer for 2022. Thank-you once again for your support.
Moot Club Officer ①
Isabella Baptista
As a First-Year student, I was looking for ways to get involved at university so I decided to give mooting a chance to see if I would enjoy it. I competed in the Clayton Utz First Year Moot and since then I have developed a passion for mooting. I competed in the preliminary and semi-finals of the competition. Not only did this give me mooting experience it also gave me a chance to see how moot competitions operated and I saw how much hard work was put into the competition. I would love to be a part of the team as a Mooting Officer, so I can work behind the scenes to help organise next year’s mooting competitions, events and workshops. I am looking forward to competing in more mooting competitions and other law competitions throughout my degree.
If I was chosen as Mooting Officer, I would help to provide more support for students who want to start mooting. When I was preparing for my first competition, I had no idea what to expect, I had definitely sent a million emails to the Moot Club looking for answers to my long list of questions. Therefore, it would be great to provide more resources to students such as an FAQ.
I understand that coordinating moots requires a lot of hard work, as I only work part-time and undertake three units per semester, I will have the time to work alongside the Mooting Director and dedicate myself to the role.
I would also love to be a part of the QUTLS because I have enjoyed attending their events as they have been a great opportunity to meet other students and I will definitely be attending more next year. I hope you consider me for the role, thank you.
Moot Club Officer ②
Jun Ki Cho (Luis)
My name is Jun Ki (Luis) Cho and I am a first-year student studying Bachelor of Laws (Honours) at QUT. Over the course of the year, I have been involved in countless competitions that was organised by QUTLS, including the negotiation competition, first-year mooting competition, junior moot competition and client interview competition. Being involved in numerous mooting competitions allowed me to connect with various peers who were involved in the mooting club. These connections allowed me to learn that the mooting club organises holds information sessions for students, allowing them to prepare for mooting competitions. This aligns with my strong ambition in joining the QUTLS, which is to provide students with competitions that allows them to experience the legal world that will come across their journey in their legal career.
I am highly organised, detail-oriented, and conscientious team-starter. I can strategise and prioritise effectively to accomplish multiple tasks and contribute to the creation and execution of organising mooting club competitions and general information sessions about mooting.
Moot Club Officer ②

Ciaran Greig
My name is Ciaran Greig and I am a fourth-year Fine Arts (Creative Writing)/Law student at QUT. I am passionate about writing and publications and would be honoured to be a Publications Officer for the QUT Law Society again in 2022. My work has been published in QUT’s Scratchthat Magazine; QUT Glass and, of course, the QUTLS’ own The Gavel. My writing has been shortlisted for the faculty-judged QUT Allen and Unwin Writers Prize two years in a row (2020, 2021).
I am proud to have volunteered my time this year to be a Publications Officer for the QUTLS, and I would like to continue the work the Media & Communications team has started this year in the portfolio, particularly in respect to the rebranded QUTLS magazine, The Gavel. I am proud to have been part of this rebrand and have been part of the production of two editions of this magazine. I have also been a part of the team that brought you many other QUTLS publications this year, including the First Year Guide, the Springboard Careers Guide, The Fortnightly newsletter, and a forthcoming collaborative publication with the Student Success Group. In my capacity as a Publications Officer, I have demonstrated my strong work ethic and teamwork skills. I am committed to producing high-quality publications for QUT Law students, and I hope to continue this work if I am re-elected to this position for 2022.
I also have practical experience in this area. In 2019, I completed a publications internship within the communications team at Brisbane Girls Grammar School, where I reviewed and proofread various publications before distribution to the School’s wider community. I also practise my writing skills within my administrative role at a law firm, where I draft documents and letters to clients. This year I also volunteered my time as a Social Media Manager for the QUT Literary Salon, which involved running the organisation’s social media accounts, creating content, and writing copy. As a result, I am confident writing, editing, and proofreading content across a wide range of genres and contexts. Additionally, I am confident that I could use both my own writing skills as well as my networks in both the Creative Industries and Law faculties to source articles and content for the full suite of QUTLS publications.

The Torts Illustrated is one of the QUT Law Society’s biggest publications and it would be an absolute honour to work behind the scenes putting it together. Whether it is contributing to the creation of an issue, helping out with the QUTLS newsletter or assisting wherever is necessary, I am the one for it. I believe this role requires great organisation, a love for writing and an air of creativity, and that is what I can bring to this role. Having written for the Torts Illustrated before, through my other leadership positions and having helped publish articles for the Queensland Youth Parliament, I believe I have the experience and knowledge to take on this role. I am willing to put in 173% and work alongside the Director of Media and Communication and the rest of the team, every step of the way.

As a double-degree student, who is also studying film, I have a keen interest in media and communication. I am passionate using audio and visual mediums to communicate, which is extremely relevant in today’s digital age and as the university moves to an increasingly online delivery. In the film component of my degree, I have worked in a team to create aesthetically pleasing and engaging material as well as developing my collaboration and teamwork skills. I would love to further develop my creative and collaborative skills within a legal context in this position to deliver all QUTLS publications to a high standard.
My experience in group assignment essays between both law and film has also shown that I enjoy taking an editorial role by bringing together the group’s work in a cohesive way and making sure our grammar and punctuation is correct. I appreciate being able to collaborate by supporting and enhancing other’s academic and creative writing, which is something I found extremely enjoyable in my Introduction to Screenwriting Unit this year.
Publications Officer (x2) ①

Having expressed my desire and suitability for the role of Director of Media and Communications, I am also interested in taking up one of the Publication Officer roles. I was thrilled to have been published in the first edition of Corpus Juris earlier this year, and I am eager to assist in the development of future publications. Possessing strong written and verbal communication skills, and an interest in pursuing research and academic work in the future, I would be a strong fit for this role. As such I seek to engage with a range of academic works and support the Law School’s abundance of budding academics and future lawyers through providing opportunities to create and share their work.
I am excited by the prospect of continuing to work with the QUT Law Society to further its objectives as the representative body of QUT Law students. My experience within the society thus far has enriched my time at university and I look forward to continuing my contribution to society and enhancing the academic, social, and professional experiences of the students it represents.

In addition to my interest in the Diversity, Culture and Wellbeing, I am interested in contributing to the Education portfolio through the role of Publications Officer. I believe my unique blend of skills and experience will put me in good stead to deliver outcomes for this portfolio. I have experience as an education programmer for major arts organisations, and my own written work has been published in various arts publications. I was a Publications Consultant for the inaugural Griffith Centre for Creative Arts Research, contributing publications for many of their academic symposiums and public art projects. From 2015-2018 I was the founder and director of an artist run initiative that programmed monthly exhibitions of local emerging artists and established an independent publishing house that distributed accompanying exhibition catalogues with essays commissioned by local arts writers and academics. Many of these publications have since been archived in the State Libraries collection of artist books.

*Opens Instagram, taps to watch Instagram Story* Hey everyone, just wanted to quickly jump on here to let you know that I am in my third year at QUT, studying Law/Business and I am passionate about social media and would love to work behind the scenes in promoting all law society events and any tasks incidental to this. I have a keen interest in all things social media, whether that be Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Twitter, Tumblr and especially LinkedIn! I regretfully must admit that my screen time is fairly high some days (numbers are triggering) – but on the plus side of that, I am extra responsive to all messages or requests and willing to go the extra mile to adhere to the publishing calendar (so long as it is outside of my scheduled down-time hours!). I am a big fan of aesthetic posts and personally I think I would help via making the posts more engaging and more appealing, to garner a better turnout to events or more support for competitions or submissions. I know my way around Instagram and definitely have a few tips and tricks up my sleeve – I think some of the current monochromatic gradient default backgrounds for story uploads could do with a little glow-up. Certainly, I would contain my work within the realm of the standards of the social media code of conduct that must be complied with. I would maintain professionality whilst increasing viewership on all platforms and its effective reach, to ensure members of the society know what is on and when it is on. Perhaps some ‘this or that’ poll options on the Instagram stories to brighten up a Monday morning? Have a lovely rest of your week, talk soon! *Closes Instagram*

Sponsorship Officer ②
Emily Robertson
Hi everyone! My name is Emily and over 2021 I have been part of the QUTLS committee as Social Media Officer. I originally joined QUTLS as a way to network and be more involved in university, but have found more through great people and events held along the way. Nominating for Events, Sponsorship and External Competitions Officer, I know I can apply what I've learnt through the year as Social Media Officer to increase our reach and engagement for the portfolio's events (whichever portfolio that may be!). Continuing my involvement in the QUTLS for 2022 is something I would be stoked to achieve, thanks!
Sponsorship Officer ②
Jake Lamb
Hello guys. My name is Jake and I am a second year Law and Finance student. I would love the opportunity to become the next Sponsorship Officer.
Sponsorship Officer ①
Laurence Santini
My name is Laurence Santini and I am honoured by the opportunity to put myself forward for a position within the QUTLS.
Who am I?
I am a third-year dual degree (Laws/Business) student at QUT, currently clerking at AJ & Co Lawyers at Waterfront Place. I am also an avid volunteer in contracts and governance at Brisbane City Football Club.
Why QUTLS?
I have often looked at the QUTLS as the holy grail of being a law student at QUT. While participating in the many events run by the QUTLS, I was enthralled by the meticulous planning, strategy and execution that came with it. I am currently in a stage of stability in my life with respect to my studies, occupation, and general life. For that, I am capable and excited to wholeheartedly commit my capacity to the QUTLS.
How will I add value to the QUTLS?
I am a person who is motivated by strategy, acumen, and tact. These key traits are how I aim to approach all facets of my life. In my experience at an executive level at Brisbane City Football Club, I understand the grunt-work that is involved with business development, networking, and professional upkeep. No less, but I am eager to take on responsibility in this space with the QUTLS. I am an organised, efficient, and a self-starting professional. Personally, I am a loud, proud, and fun-loving people person. I am also a very competitive person. With that, nothing would make me happier than to be a part of cementing law at QUT at the top amongst our competitors.
Our relationship with firms is key in establishing who we are as QUT law students, and I would be more than humbled by being elected to build lasting relationships with our sponsors.
Sponsorship Officer ①
Luka Roppola
Sponsorship Officer ②
Sports Officer ①
Sports Officer ②
Fahim Rahman
I wish to be Sports Officer for the QUT Law Society in 2022. I have been a massive fan and player of Football and Cricket since I was a kid however in the past three years, I have explored my sporting interests further into activities such as rock climbing, running and netball. I love playing sports as it challenges me to be my best me and I wish to give that feeling to fellow members of the QUT Law Society.
My interest in trying new sports has led me to play with the QUT Law Society Soccer and Netball team in the last two years. Furthermore in 2021 I was elected as Treasurer in two QUT Clubs (QUT Running and QUT Running) providing me with experience in a sporting club and a legal club. My adverse experience in QUT Clubs complied with my passion for sports makes me the suited person for this role.
And ultimately, I wish to be involved in an amazing committee working towards a great cause!
