QUTLS’ Declassified Law School Survival Guide

O Week is upon us for another year and the QUT Law Society is getting ready to welcome new members as first years come running down the pavements of George Street.

Starting university can be a bit overwhelming: from the absolute panic that is your first class sign-on to trying not to stare too long at the cute Merlo boy when you order your first coffee. Here at QUTLS we’ve decided to make your life a little easier by compiling all the information you’ll need to make the most out of your first year in Law.

There will be in depth physical copies of our Law School Guide at our stall at O Week (yet another reason to come check us out over the next three days) but for those of you who can’t make it, read on for the highlights…

Events and Activities

QUTLS runs great events and networking opportunities each year and we love to see first years getting involved. For those of you already eager to learn more about the legal industry our Meet the Profession event is the one for you. Rub shoulders with working professionals and representative from top legal firms over drinks and canapés and fulfil all your networking dreams.

Or if social activities are more up your alley, we offer a wide range of great events for law students to let their hair down after hitting the textbooks hard such as Law Ball, Law Dinner and #letsgetrekt.

Keep an eye on the QUTLS Facebook page for details of all these events and more throughout the year.

L Cards and Friday’s Riverside

The Law Societies of QUT, UQ USQ and Griffith have teamed up for another year of the L Card, which can best be described as your Golden Ticket. Not only does it give you great discounts around campus and beyond (think discounted Merlo coffee to help make contact with the aforementioned cute Merlo boy) but the L Card is your official membership for the QUTLS.

If you’ve never been to Friday’s Riverside than get ready for a sea of boys in RM’s, espresso martini’s and good times. This bar seems to be the haunt of every Law student in Brisbane and with the L Card you get free entry! As if you needed another reason to purchase your L Card at O Week!

See a full list of the discounts offered here.

Competitions

Another great way to get involved and give your resume an extra boost is to participate in the numerous competitions QUTLS run through out the year. These include mooting, client interview, negotiation and paper presentation.

Mooting in particular is a great way to strengthen your legal knowledge, research and advocacy skills and QUTLS offers a Moot Club and First Year Moot to help you build these skills. If your interested than come along to our Welcome to Moot Club night where you can get a feel for what mooting involves and eat some free food while your at it! For more details see our Facebook event.

The QUTLS has an office in C Block (your new home) so if you have any questions about membership, our events/competitions or want to have a chat to some veteran law students than feel free to visit us during our office hours. We look forward to meeting you!
